SEO for small companies: why Google doesn't find you and what you can do about it

By Črt Kranjc · Published

Have a website but nobody finds you on Google? Here's why this happens and which concrete steps you can take so potential customers start searching for and finding you.

You have a website. You're paying for it. And yet potential customers still can't find you on Google. The reason isn't that Google dislikes your company. The reason is that Google doesn't know who you are or who it should show you to.

SEO for small companies isn't some kind of technical magic. It's a systematic process that adds clear signals to your website and company: who you are, what you do, for whom and where. Once these signals are set up correctly, Google starts showing you to people searching for exactly that.

Why Google doesn't find you: 7 most common reasons

  1. The site has no clear keywords. Headlines like "Welcome to our website" tell Google nothing. A headline like "IT support for small companies in Ljubljana" tells it everything.
  2. Missing meta titles and descriptions. Every subpage needs its own title and meta description that contain keywords and clearly say what the page is about.
  3. The content is too generic. "We offer quality services" isn't content. Specific pages for specific services and target groups are content.
  4. The site is slow. Speed is a ranking factor. A site that takes more than 3 seconds to load loses visitors and Google positions.
  5. The Google Business Profile isn't set up, or doesn't exist. Without it you don't appear in local searches or on Google Maps.
  6. There are no internal links. Pages aren't linked to each other, so Google doesn't understand the structure or the importance of individual subpages.
  7. There's no content answering customers' questions. Without a blog or content pages, Google has no reason to show you for the questions people actually type in.

Three pillars of SEO for small companies

1. Technical SEO: the foundations without which nothing works

These are things that aren't visible at first glance, but without them Google can't read your site properly:

  • page loading speed,
  • mobile adaptation,
  • HTTPS and an SSL certificate,
  • sitemap.xml and robots.txt,
  • structured data (JSON LD),
  • correct heading structure H1, H2, H3,
  • canonical links,
  • a clear URL containing the keyword.

2. Content SEO: who you're writing for and what they're searching for

The most important part. Without the right content, even perfect technical SEO doesn't help. Concrete steps:

  • keyword research based on what your customers actually type,
  • one subpage for one core topic, not mixing all services onto one page,
  • writing for a human, not for the algorithm,
  • a clear H1 with the main keyword,
  • a blog that answers customers' real questions,
  • internal links between related content.

3. Local SEO: how customers in your area find you

For most small companies this is the most important part of SEO. Customers search for "accountant Kranj", "IT support Ljubljana", "electrician Maribor". If you're not prepared for these searches, your competitors get ahead of you.

  • a well maintained, up to date Google Business Profile,
  • correct NAP (Name, Address, Phone) on the site and in all directories,
  • customer reviews on the Google profile,
  • location keywords in headings and content,
  • listing in relevant Slovenian directories,
  • content that mentions the place and region where you operate.

Google Business Profile: the most underrated tool

Free, takes an afternoon to set up correctly, and for many small companies brings in more enquiries than the website itself. What needs to be in order:

  • the correct company name, without extra keywords,
  • categories that accurately describe your services,
  • opening hours, address, phone, website,
  • quality photos of the company, team and premises,
  • a description of the company with keywords,
  • actively collecting reviews from satisfied customers,
  • regular posts and updates.

How to choose the right keywords for a small company

The most common mistake is targeting overly generic words like "accounting" or "IT". These are dominated by large portals and you don't stand a chance with them.

The right approach is looking for specific, longer phrases that a company director actually types when they have a problem:

  • "accounting service for sole traders Ljubljana"
  • "IT support for small companies"
  • "how much does a website cost for a craftsperson"
  • "how to set up GDPR in a company"

These keywords get fewer searches, but they're far more qualified. Someone typing exactly this is ready to buy or make an enquiry.

Realistic timeline: when SEO starts working

  • First month: technical fixes, an organised Google profile, first pieces of content.
  • 2 to 3 months: first movement on local and less competitive keywords.
  • 3 to 6 months: steady growth in traffic, first real enquiries from Google.
  • 6 to 12 months: establishing rankings on competitive keywords, regular enquiries.

Anyone who promises you "first place in 30 days" is either lying or using techniques that will get your site penalised by Google later.

Most common SEO mistakes among small companies

  • the same keywords on every subpage,
  • copying content from competitors' websites,
  • keywords too generic to realistically rank for,
  • a neglected Google Business Profile,
  • no blog or content pages,
  • a slow, poorly built site,
  • paying for "SEO packages" that don't include any specific activity,
  • buying links from dubious sites.

How I can help with SEO for your company

In my work I don't sell SEO packages along the lines of "X links a month". I first look at what your company actually does, who your customers are and what they're searching for. Then I set up the technical fundamentals, content structure, Google Business Profile and a long term content strategy.

SEO isn't magic and it isn't fast, but it's one of the most profitable long term investments for a small company. A customer who finds you themselves through Google is the best customer you can get.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't Google show my company at all?

The most common reasons are unclear keywords, missing meta titles and descriptions, generic content, a slow site, a missing or poorly set up Google Business Profile, and no internal links between pages.

How long does it take for SEO to start working?

Expect technical fixes and first content in month one, initial movement on local keywords within 2 to 3 months, steady traffic growth and real enquiries within 3 to 6 months, and established rankings on competitive keywords within 6 to 12 months.

Is a Google Business Profile really that important?

Yes, especially for local searches. It's free to set up, takes about an afternoon, and often brings in more enquiries than the website itself.

Which keywords should a small company target?

Specific, longer phrases that customers actually type when they have a problem, rather than broad generic terms that are dominated by large portals.
